Built a fantasy pier for fun. Started with big forms slowly into smaller forms.

Start playing around geometric forms to find aesthetic balance.

Cubes are actually hard to make sense. Design line that touches edges are especially to connect on the other sides. Symmetrical designs are easier to consider in terms of weight and focus.

Doing these are especially challenging, more challenging than the sphere designs. Mainly because the sphere looks like a circle from all angles so the whole sheet can include some in 3 dimensional explorations. With the square, I’m forced to deal with flat on 2D shape design, and that really forces me to design intelligently on the plane I’m given.

This may just well be the 3x3 pixel canvas version for design. I’ll be doing a series of spheres, cubes, and pyramids to explore design opportunities.

Did this set while watching the E3 Press Conference. Now it reminds me of Nintendo, Xbox, and PS4 when I see this. I don’t normally watch E3, and the subconscious influence did yield a result that’s a little off.

Time and time again I jump to complex forms when I’m still practicing the more fundamental scale. When the scale increases, I experience the same kind of vulnerability as when I was doing the pixel color exercise. The increase in complexity just by a tiny bit makes everything much more difficult to hold together.

Training is not the most rewarding exercise. I’m finally able to bring the results of my color and form explorations together. The goal is to expand onto more complex form and materials.

form and colors are starting to meld. This batch I was able to experiment more on shapes other than just colors.

Haven’t done any color exercise for quite awhile. After doing form exercise this time does induce more skeleton into the design. Even it’s just pixels.

unlike the color studies, the form exercise is very dry to plow through but important nevertheless…

With the design book exercise, I’m starting to sketch designs in the most fundamental geometric forms. Turns out it’s still too much freedom. I’m borrowing my color exercise with canvas 3x3, 3x5, 15x20, etc, I’m starting to sketching in a 3x3 grid and explore the geometric shapes exclusively. Finally turned things into 3D with 3x3x3 and face a completely new realm of possibilities.

more form experiment. I notice it is easy to fall into the trap of repeating scale and shapes when new element is added. The exercise led me to break out of this habit making sure they vary in elevation, scale, and orientation even they are geometric shapes. Done in 5 minutes in Minecraft.

part of the new series, form workshop, exploring concepts and designs with forms. I’ve never really sketched exclusively with a stylus before, which is essential if all of my future work is going to be in the digital medium in the future. The lines are quite crooked. Definitely need more practice.
